Smart and Green Energy (SAGE) for Base Camps was a U.S. Army Logistics Innovation Agency (LIA) initiative that successfully demonstrated a 30%-60% reduction in base camp fuel use by integrating commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) energy efficient technologies.

SAGE technologies included a smart micro-grid; an energy storage system; energy efficient shelters; a base camp energy management system; and renewable energy sources. SAGE design and contract specifications were provided to military engineers and contracting offices to assist them in designing and building more energy efficient small-to- medium sized base camps (e.g., 600 to 5,000 Soldiers).
